Patience is not the first trait that comes to mind when I think of King David. Zeal, eloquence, charisma, and leadership skills are some of the qualities that I associate with Israel’s greatest king—but patience? My impression has always been that David was primarily a man of passion and action. But when I recently read through the Psalms, I came to the realization that David certainly mastered patience during his long and eventful life. Here are some examples:

There’s an old story about a Roman soldier named Caius. He was one of the footmen in the ever-advancing Roman army. Caius had a sickness that he knew was terminal. Here’s a clichéd question for you: How would you live if you knew this day was your last day on earth?

This question is presented in hundreds of motivational books, seminars, and lectures. Sometimes it’s worded differently, but the concept is the same: “Live every day as if it were your last.” The

Judy Garland, an American actress, once said something that I really like. She said, “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.”

While watching an old western movie, I noticed the structure of many of the buildings in the set. All along the main street of the
