In the Face of Lies

Authored by Eldora Sichrovsky (a guest contribution)

A few months ago, I began a project of reading my Bible cover to cover. This venture has involved studying books and passages that I’d never read before or never in their entirety. It’s been a rewarding and fascinating journey, and I’ve made several discoveries along the way, one of which I’d like to share with you. I was reading through the book of Isaiah when I found, in chapters 36 and 37, this amazing story:

Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and their pal, Daniel, were four teenagers who might have passed into obscurity if not for some remarkable things that happened in their lives. It wasn’t the actual things that happened to them; it was their responses to these events that caused them to go down in history as great

My son is practicing his reading. Every evening he pulls The Beginner’s Bible out and reads a couple of stories to me—like parents often do with their children, only for us it’s the other way around.

One of the most well-known-but-strange stories in the Bible is the one related in the book of Jonah. Nearly everyone, it seems, knows about Jonah and the whale. It’s a Sunday school favorite. But it’s also one of those perplexing tales that makes one wonder, “Why, God, why?” Let’s look at a little background.

I ended my last podcast in the middle of the subject of what Jesus looked like after His resurrection. This is important to us because we are going to look similar to Him in the future. For me, being kind of an old guy at the moment, it’s quite encouraging to consider the idea that I’m going to look better in the future. In this life, generally, we don’t get better looking the older we get. So it is nice, in a way, to realize that the

It is not yet disclosed (made clear) what we shall be [hereafter], but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall [as God’s children] resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him just as He [really] is.1

I think it is good to be curious, to have a healthy interest in and investigate things we don’t understand. It is also good to

I have come to realize that my perceptions have been wrong when it comes to where Jesus lived as a kid and presumably as a young man. I have always been aware that Galilee was in the north of Israel and a fair distance from the big city of Jerusalem, but it is only lately that I have come to appreciate just how far out “in the sticks” Galilee was, and how this impacted Jesus and His followers and also the Jews of His

I’m a history buff. I don’t know why it fascinates me, but it has ever since I can remember. So I tend to want to know the reasons stuff in the Bible happened the way it did. For example: I have been interested in why the Israelites headed in the completely wrong direction when they left Egypt in the Exodus all those thousands of years ago.

I know some people say they love being miserable. In fact, I even used to say it was better to be a pessimist because then I would never be disappointed. While at the time that sounded good to me in theory, things became too miserable and I lacked the commitment to that philosophy to keep it up, so I soon decided it was a dumb idea.

We have recently seen a prediction of “the Day of Judgment is upon us” come and go. As you may have heard, Harold Camping, a Christian radio broadcaster, had predicted that Jesus would return on May 21st, 2011, at 6:00PM.

He arrived at that date through a calculation involving various number values given in the Bible. The product of his
